We are looking for an experienced litigation paralegal to provide support and advice to in-house legal and shareholder teams dealing with a public inquiry and a variety of other litigation issues. We are aiming for the appointed candidate to start in September, subject to the successful completion of reference checks and security clearance.

You will be joining us on a 12-18 month fixed term contract.

At UK Government Investments (UKGI), we provide the government with expertise in corporate finance and governance. What we do is unique. We are responsible for ensuring the effective governance and stewardship of government owned companies (such as NatWest Group and the British Business Bank), advising the government on corporate finance issues (including interventions into distressed corporate structures, such as Thomas Cook, British Steel or UK’s acquisition of satellite firm OneWeb) and all significant UK government asset sales (for example, the sale of the Green Investment Bank, sale of UK residential mortgages (most recently through a £4.9 billion disposal in 2019), securitisation of the Student Loan book or the IPO of the Royal Mail). The work we do is significant in terms of social, economic and political impact.

Wholly owned by HM Treasury (HMT), UKGI has a team comprised of c.160 experts which is quickly growing, drawn from the private sector (from banks, accountancy and legal firms) and from the Civil Service to ensure we provide government departments with high quality advice that is delivered and acted upon in the best way possible.

UKGI lawyers advise on a mix of corporate finance and corporate governance issues in both a transactional and advisory capacity and on litigation and public inquiry matters. The team is regularly provided with opportunities to explore and grow expertise across a broad range of legal issues.

UKGI legal is a small, close-knit team which provides a broad range of legal support, working collaboratively with UKGI colleagues, as they deliver UKGI’s high profile corporate finance, corporate governance, litigation oversight and inquiry strategy roles. The work of the legal team is truly varied. No project or shareholder role is alike, and each requires a tailored legal response.


Key Responsibilities

As a paralegal within the UKGI legal team your responsibilities will include:

• General litigation support in relation to the organisation’s participation in a public inquiry process. For example, assisting with the review and analysis of documentary evidence, preparing evidence bundles, assisting with the preparation of witness statements and other submissions;
• Working with UKGI lawyers on preparing for and attending inquiry hearings;
• Assisting with the instructing of external lawyers including counsel and managing legal spend;
• Acting as a liaison with the inquiry on administrative matters;
• Organising and maintaining files; and
• Assisting with project management of key workstreams.


About You

You will preferably have 2+ years experience in a law firm or other legal team.
You will have a law degree/GDL and LPC qualification.
You will preferably have public inquiry experience, though general litigation, regulatory or other related contentious experience will also be considered.
You will be a self-starter with the ability to work with senior management stakeholders (both internal and external).
You will have the ability to prioritise and work on time sensitive matters in a fast-paced environment and the flexibility to adapt to emerging priorities and objectives.
